BIRT Report Designer supports a wide variety of data sources, enabling flexibility in how you connect and integrate your data for reporting purposes. The supported data sources include:

  1. Relational Databases:

    • SQL Databases: BIRT supports popular SQL-based databases like MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, DB2, and others.
    • JDBC Connectivity: BIRT can connect to any relational database via JDBC (Java Database Connectivity) drivers, making it highly adaptable for various SQL-based systems.
  2. Web Services:

    • SOAP and RESTful Services: BIRT can pull data from web services, including REST APIs and SOAP-based services, enabling the use of dynamic, real-time data from web-based sources.
  3. Flat Files:

    • CSV and XML Files: You can easily import data from flat files such as CSV (Comma-Separated Values) or XML (Extensible Markup Language) files, allowing for simple integration of offline or legacy data sources.
  4. Spreadsheets:

    • Excel (XLS, XLSX): BIRT supports data extraction from Microsoft Excel files, which is especially useful when working with spreadsheet-based data sources.
  5. Scripted Data Sources:

    • Custom Data: BIRT allows you to use scripted data sources where you can write custom scripts (in JavaScript or other languages) to connect to and process non-standard or complex data sources.
  6. NoSQL Databases:

    • MongoDB and others: With certain extensions or custom drivers, BIRT can connect to NoSQL databases like MongoDB, expanding its capabilities for handling unstructured data.
  7. ERP Systems and Business Applications:

    • BIRT can be extended to connect with enterprise systems such as SAP, Oracle E-Business Suite, or other business applications using custom connectors or APIs.
  8. Custom Data Adapters:

    • If you need to connect to a data source that isn't natively supported, BIRT allows for the creation of custom data adapters using its extensible architecture.
